    From 3.0 Beginnings to Copilot Days


    I was eight years old in 1990 when Windows 3.0 landed with showtime flair. My own journey had started a little bit earlier on a Commodore Plus/4, typing BASIC line by line from a computer magazine. Later saving it to tape, and learning the quiet thrill of making a machine do exactly what I wanted. But the day a 486 Desktop arrived at my home in the mid 90s and I typed win into the DOS console was a different game.

    Suddenly computing wasn’t just console and coding and curiosity. It was a daily operating system for my life: school projects, games, hardware tinkering, the first modem squeals. And then, from early 2000s onward, the full rush of the internet. First with dual ISDN connection and 128kb, later the first DSL connection with 768kb. Since this time mid of the 90s, Windows has been my instrument—professionally and privately. It is evolving alongside my career from retail clerc, to productmanager to cloud architect and now as “Mr. Microsoft.”


    From Program Manager to the Start Button:
    Windows Finds Its Voice


    Windows 3.0 and 3.1 gave structure: Program Manager, File Manager, TrueType fonts, a UI you could actually live in. They made PCs feel less like terminals and more like creative studios. Then Windows 95 put the Start button in our hands and Plug and Play on our desks. Consumer excitement with real utility. Windows 98 kept the web close; Windows ME taught us caution; Windows 2000 and NT proved Windows could be enterprise-serious.

    Windows XP unified home and office with a long, dependable run. Vista stretched the model (not without pain), but it raised the bar for security. Windows 7 refined the everyday—fast, familiar, stable. Windows 8 bet early on touch and modern apps. It wasn’t everyone’s favorite, but it pointed at where devices were heading. Windows 10 turned Windows into a service with evergreen updates. Windows 11 polished the craft—calmer visuals, stronger baselines, modern silicon features. And it set the stage for what matters now: identity, cloud, and AI.

    The Workbench Grows Up:
    Identity, Devices, and the Cloud-First Shift


    Once upon a time, a Windows rollout meant imaging rooms, weekend patch marathons, and hunting drivers on CDs. Today, my daily toolbox looks very different. Microsoft Entra ID as the identity backbone, Intune for zero-touch provisioning, Conditional Access and Defender for endpoint posture. Additionally Windows Update for Business rings that move at the pace of risk. Files aren’t “on a share” anymore. They live where people work—OneDrive, SharePoint, Teams—protected by sensitivity labels, DLP, and encryption at rest and in transit.

    That shift changed how we design. We don’t just deploy machines; we operate a living fabric of identity, devices, and services. Governance isn’t a checklist—it’s design. If you lead an enterprise today, that’s the mindset: make the secure, compliant path the easy, default path.


    From Win32 to the Web to AI Agents:
    The Developer Story Keeps Widening


    I cut my teeth on BASIC and learned the Windows APIs that came after. Win32, then .NET, then a world where the browser, REST, and Graph made “Windows development” also mean “cloud development.” Visual Studio and VS Code, GitHub, Dev Box, Azure DevOps and Pipelines—our workbench is no longer a PC; it’s a platform constellation. Today, that constellation includes Copilot and Azure AI, where natural language becomes the glue between intent and implementation. The lesson from Windows 3.x still applies: when abstractions get good, new behaviors become normal. Don’t get me wrong, I am not a developer and never was. I am an Architect and trusted advisor to my clients. But I am playing along with it all the time.


    Upgrades, Games, and the Human Factor


    I still remember swapping RAM sticks, adding a Sound Blaster, sliding in a Voodoo card, and the simple pride of a self-built rig booting first try. Windows grew with that tinkerer spirit—DirectX evolved, game mode reduced jitter, GPU drivers became less drama. Meanwhile laptops turned into all-day companions with great keyboards, color-accurate panels, and TPM-backed security that just works. The best tools eventually disappear into the background so you can focus on work… or a late-night session of Age of Empires.


    What the Cloud and AI Era Means for Us Pros and for Everyone Else


    For IT pros, the cloud turned projects into practices. Join a device to Entra ID, enforce Conditional Access, provision via Intune, wrap data in Purview sensitivity labels, monitor with Defender and Sentinel, and govern with policy as code. Compliance, sovereignty, and resilience aren’t side quests—they’re built into the pipeline.

    For everyone else, the change is just as real. Collaboration is co-authoring in Word as you talk in Teams. Photos and files follow you; sign-in is a tap on your phone instead of a password you’ll forget. And now, AI is moving from novelty to utility. Copilot in Windows and Microsoft 365 shortens the distance between an idea and its first draft. Between a meeting and its action points, between raw data and a narrative worth sharing. The PC is still the most private, personal runtime you own. Now with an assistant that respects identity, policy, and the boundaries you set.


    Why Thirty-Five Years Still Matter


    Windows endured because of a cultural promise: carry the past forward while nudging it into the future. Compatibility built trust; innovation kept momentum. That’s the blueprint I use with clients across Azure, Microsoft 365, Dynamics, and the wider ecosystem. Modernize without breaking muscle memory; ship value without leaking risk; measure outcomes, not noise.

    I started on a Commodore Plus/4, grew up through DOS and Windows 3.x, and built a career on the waves that followed. The tools changed; the curiosity didn’t. If anything, the cloud-and-AI era gives us more leverage than ever. Provided we design with governance, lead with identity, and keep the user in the center of the frame.

    Will Stack IT replace Azure, GCP and AWS in Europe?


    It is one of those questions that makes the rounds in boardrooms and strategy sessions: could a European cloud provider such as Stack IT ever replace the global giants Azure, AWS, and Google Cloud? On the surface, the timing seems right. Policymakers in Brussels are pushing hard for digital sovereignty 🇪🇺. National governments are raising the bar on compliance. Enterprises, especially those in highly regulated industries, are looking for alternatives that give them peace of mind when it comes to data protection 🔐.

    Against this backdrop, Stack IT enters the picture and positions itself as a trustworthy, sovereign alternative. But does that mean it will dethrone the hyperscalers anytime soon? The short answer is no. The longer answer is that Stack IT is carving out a very specific role—one that complements rather than replaces the global players. Let’s explore why.


    What is Stack IT Cloud?


    Stack IT Cloud is a European cloud provider headquartered in Germany, designed from the ground up to deliver sovereignty, compliance, and trust. Unlike global hyperscalers that operate under U.S. law, Stack IT ensures that all data remains subject to European jurisdiction and GDPR standards ✅. This is a powerful differentiator for organizations in sectors such as government, healthcare, or finance, where regulatory compliance is more than a checkmark—it is mission-critical.

    The portfolio of Stack IT Cloud is intentionally lean. It focuses on core infrastructure services such as compute power through virtual machines, secure block and object storage, and enterprise-grade backup solutions. It also enables container-based application architectures through Kubernetes and API-driven orchestration. On top of that, Stack IT provides networking capabilities, including VPN and private interconnects, that allow seamless integration into hybrid and multi-cloud environments. Selected managed services, such as databases and developer platforms, round off the offering.

    This is not the “everything store” of cloud computing. Instead, it is a curated set of services designed to meet the sovereignty and security requirements of European enterprises while staying compatible with modern IT architectures.


    The Common Ground: Stack IT and the Hyperscalers


    Despite the differences in scale, Stack IT shares essential characteristics with Azure, AWS, and Google Cloud. At the heart of each platform lies the same principle: elastic, scalable, and on-demand infrastructure ☁️. A virtual machine provisioned in Stack IT behaves much like one in AWS or Azure. Developers consume resources when needed and pay for what they use—cloud as utility computing.

    There is also shared alignment in architecture. Kubernetes, containers, APIs, and automation are the standards of cloud-native design. Enterprises building CI/CD pipelines or microservices applications do not need to abandon these models when shifting workloads to Stack IT.

    Security and compliance, too, form common ground. Encryption, access management, monitoring, and certifications are expected from any enterprise-grade cloud provider. While Stack IT emphasizes European data residency, the hyperscalers also invest heavily in compliance frameworks.

    Finally, all providers embrace the idea of ecosystems. Hyperscalers thrive because of their vast partner networks. Stack IT is following the same playbook, building alliances with software vendors, local integrators, and public sector agencies.


    Where the Differences Really Matter


    The crucial differences lie in scale, scope, and innovation 🚀.

    Hyperscalers operate at a global level with hundreds of services covering everything from AI supercomputers to IoT platforms. By contrast, Stack IT deliberately restricts itself to a smaller service catalog. This reflects its strategy: it does not aim to compete feature by feature, but to excel in trust, compliance, and sovereignty.

    The global footprint of hyperscalers is another dividing line. Microsoft Azure spans more than 60 regions, AWS operates data centers on nearly every continent, and Google Cloud integrates seamlessly with worldwide enterprises 🌍. Stack IT, in contrast, is rooted in Europe. Its strength lies in local data residency and legal jurisdiction.

    Innovation speed also highlights the difference. Microsoft, Amazon, and Google pour billions into R&D every quarter, releasing new services on a near-weekly cadence. Stack IT cannot keep up with that pace. Instead, it focuses on stability, reliability, and sovereign compliance.

    Finally, there is customer reach and credibility. Hyperscalers are deeply entrenched in enterprise IT. Stack IT is still building that track record, primarily within the public sector and regulated industries.


    Conclusion: A Complement, Not a Replacement


    So, will Stack IT replace Azure, AWS, and Google Cloud in Europe? The reality is no—not now, and not in the foreseeable future. The hyperscalers are simply too far ahead in terms of service breadth, innovation, and global infrastructure.

    But Stack IT has an essential role to play. It is not a competitor in the traditional sense, but a complement in a broader multi-cloud strategy. Enterprises can continue to leverage Azure, AWS, and GCP for advanced services such as analytics, AI, and global collaboration. At the same time, they can integrate Stack IT for workloads that require absolute sovereignty, strict compliance, or local data residency guarantees.

    For public sector organizations, healthcare providers, financial institutions, and operators of critical infrastructure, Stack IT delivers peace of mind that no global hyperscaler can offer. It enables a dual approach: global innovation through hyperscalers combined with European trust through Stack IT.

    The question is not whether Stack IT will replace the hyperscalers. It won’t. The smarter question is how enterprises can design an architecture where both worlds work together. That is where the future of European cloud lies. 🌐

    Hello everyone, and welcome to my latest deep dive on the evolving landscape of data protection in Europe. As someone who studied Business Administration at the Christian-Albrechts-Universität (CAU) Kiel, I’ve always been fascinated by the intersection of global tech services and local regulatory requirements. So let’s have a look into Microsoft EU Data Boundary.

    Amid ongoing inflation, supply chain challenges, and heightened geopolitical tensions, from the war in Ukraine to rising US & China competition, businesses across the EU, especially in Germany, face an unpredictable economic and political landscape. This climate increases the urgency for secure, compliant, and resilient IT infrastructures that can weather any storm. A single security breach or compliance lapse can now spark serious legal, financial, and reputational fallout. Consequently, robust IT environments have shifted from a strategic advantage to a fundamental requirement for sustaining trust and growth. And through the uncertainties and the unpredictable political decisions from President Trump, this is going even further.

    Today’s spotlight is on Microsoft’s EU Data Boundary initiative — a development that could significantly affect how enterprises in Germany handle their data in the cloud.


    What Is the EU Data Boundary Initiative?


    In 2024, Microsoft unveiled additional measures under its EU Data Boundary framework, promising that certain customer data for core services such as AzureMicrosoft 365, and Dynamics 365 will remain strictly within the European Union. The overarching goal is to give customers in the EU, especially in Germany, greater confidence that their data is not being transferred outside the region in ways that might conflict with local privacy standards.

    Essentially: Microsoft is bolstering its existing data center infrastructure and implementing new technical and operational controls to ensure that data tied to these services stays within the EU. The initiative covers identity and metadata, as well as other categories of customer data, reflecting an end-to-end approach to data sovereignty.

These initiatives tie in with existing data residency options that Microsoft has offered in Germany and other European countries.
    2. Technical Safeguards
      Beyond physical location, technical solutions — like encryption at rest and in transit — help ensure that even if data is accessed outside the EU for support or troubleshooting, it remains protected. Where feasible, Microsoft is reducing the scenarios in which data would leave the EU for routine operations.

      Microsoft’s Trust Center and related documentation detail how the EU Data Boundary aligns with GDPR requirements. By offering auditing tools, clear documentation, and robust data governance features, Microsoft aims to simplify compliance processes for its customers.

    #Microsoft used day 1 of its Ignite event to reveal a compact ARM-powered desktop PC calles Windows 365 Link. Imagine what this means, if we put this together with the powerful Azure Dev Box solution launched in 2023. 

    As Mr. Microsoft, I’m excited about these products and keen to see how they will influence our use of tech for work. 


    🖥️ ✨ A new take on the desktop experience


    Microsoft’s new compact desktop PC combines cutting-edge ARM architecture with the power of the Cloud. It’s called Windows 365 Link for a reason. This device only runs with a Windows 365 subscription and connects directly to a Windows 10 or Windows 11 Virtual Desktop hosted on Azure. 

    Bearing a passing resemblance to recent Mac Minis, this compact computer aims to deliver enterprise-grade performance in a form factor that fits anywhere – from the home office, to the boardroom, and everywhere in between. The ARM architecture promises optimized energy efficiency and enough local performance to satisfy most people’s needs.

    Although the idea of ‘thin clients’ powered from the cloud is not new, The Windows 365 Link could be a compelling option for organizations that are invested in Microsoft technology and are keen to leverage the company’s growing suite of AI tools. 

    The format could also provide intriguing hotdesk options for those organizations that accommodate a mix of on-site, remote and hybrid working arrangements. 


    🌐 Azure Dev Box: A Developer’s playground in the cloud


    Imagine a development environment available on demand, tailored to your needs, and scalable with just a few clicks. 

    The re-introduced Azure Dev Box makes this a reality by providing:

    Pre-configured environments for development, testing, and deployment

    – Cloud-powered performance for demanding workloads without the need to procure powerful hardware on site

    – Streamlined management with integration into existing tools like Intune and Azure Active Directory

    In short, the Azure Dev Box enables developers to focus on coding without worrying about setup or resource constraints. It’s a big deal for individuals and teams whose business is focused on building digital products.

    These reveals are about more than hardware and software. With these solutions, organizations can empower their users and dramatically simplify the process of provisioning workplace tech. 

    Combined with a commitment to rolling out powerful AI-powered solutions, it’s clear that Microsoft is focusing on reinventing the workplace tech environment – improving worker productivity, while providing their employers with unprecedented levels of flexibility and scalability.

    In 2022, I had the distinct honor of taking the stage jointly with my coworker Frank Keienburg at the renowned Cloud Expo Europe to deliver a keynote address on the critical topic of FinOps in the Cloud. The event was a pivotal moment in my career, where I had the opportunity to engage with a dynamic audience eager to grasp the nuances of financial optimization in cloud computing.

    During the keynote, I emphasized the importance of FinOps—a practice that unifies financial and operational teams to control cloud costs and drive efficiency. In an era where organizations increasingly rely on the cloud, understanding how to manage and optimize cloud spending has become paramount.

    We delved into strategies for effective cloud cost management, discussing techniques for budgeting, monitoring, and optimizing cloud resources. We shared real-world case studies and success stories, demonstrating how businesses could achieve significant savings while enhancing their agility and scalability.

The new storage bar will feel familiar if you’ve seen Apple’s iTunes storage indicators for iOS devices, making it quick and simple to spot what’s gobbling up your cloud quota.

    For years, iCloud has been the behind-the-scenes engine syncing your photos, documents, app data, and device backups. But if you’re like me, you occasionally bump into that dreaded “Your iCloud Storage is Almost Full” notification. Now, on iCloud.com > Settings, you can see at a glance: 

    1. Visual Storage Bar: A color-coded bar that highlights photos, backups, and documents in distinct shades — just like when you connect an iPhone to iTunes. 
    1. Detailed Device List: Below or alongside the bar, you’ll spot every device currently signed in with your Apple ID, from iPhones to iPads to Macs. No more poking around multiple menus to check which old iPad is still hogging backup space. 

    It’s a minor tweak, but one that makes iCloud’s usage far less mysterious. Instead of guessing which app is chewing up all your gigabytes, the layout offers a quick way to identify whether it’s your photo library, iOS backups, or something else entirely. 


    Device Management: More Transparency on Linked Hardware 


    Alongside the improved storage display, the revised iCloud Settings page also details which devices are signed into your Apple account. For instance, you’ll see a neat list of all iPhones, iPads, and Macs that are currently associated with your Apple ID.
